The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has begun introducing a new system called PACE, which is a new computer system designed to simplify administrative processes. This guide will help you to better understand the PACE system, its functions, purpose, and how you can make the most of it.

What is PACE?

PACE is a new and more efficient billing and plan management system that will replace existing platforms. The new PACE system is already rolling out to people getting their first NDIS Plan. Existing participants will move to the new system at the time of their next plan reassessment. The primary goal of PACE is to provide greater control and flexibility to NDIS participants, making it easier to manage their plans and funds.

Key Features of the PACE System

  • Support Types and Categories – adjustments have been made to the existing support types, including the addition of a fourth.
    1. Core: Supports for daily activities,
    2. Capacity Building: Services aimed at building independence.
    3. Capital: Investments in assistive technologies and home modifications.
    4. Recurring: Ongoing, regular supports like transportation.

Additionally, the number of support categories within these support types have been adjusted and several new categories have been added.

  • No Service Bookings – The PACE system eliminates the need for service bookings. This change means participants are not locked into pre-allocated funds for specific providers, giving them more choice and control over their support.
  • New Portals and Consent Options – PACE introduces new portals for accessing plans and information. Participants can give providers consent to view specific parts of their plan, such as contact details or goals, which enhances collaboration and service delivery.

How to Make the Most of PACE

  • Understand Your Plan: Familiarise yourself with the new support categories and how they apply to your needs. The increased number of categories and the flexible funding structure can be advantageous if you know how to navigate them effectively.
  • Communicate with Providers: Engage with your providers to ensure they understand your goals and how to use the PACE system. Service providers including Plan Managers, SDA Providers, Support Coordinators, Behaviour Support as well as Home and Living (SIL) providers need to be registered as “my providers” to claim funds from your plan, so clear communication is essential.
  • Regular Reviews and Adjustments: Even though the PACE system offers more flexibility, it’s important to regularly review your plan and make adjustments as needed. This will help you stay on track with your goals and make the best use of your funds.
  • Use the New Features: Take advantage of the new consent options to share relevant parts of your plan with providers. This can lead to more tailored and effective support services.
  • Stay Informed: Keep up with updates from the NDIS regarding the PACE system. Understanding any new changes or features can help you better navigate the system and optimize your plan.

The PACE system represents a significant improvement in how NDIS plans are managed, offering greater flexibility and control to participants. By understanding its key features and actively managing your plan, you can make the most of the opportunities PACE provides. Stay informed, communicate effectively with your providers, and regularly review your plan to ensure you are getting the most out of your NDIS supports.
