As of October 3rd 2024, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) introduced changes to rules that make clearer the supports that can and can’t be claimed from NDIS Participant Plans. These changes aim to improve consistency and transparency, ensuring that funds are used appropriately to meet participants’ needs.

Key Changes to Understand:

One of the notable updates is that items that were previously purchased using a decision tool or letter of support will now be declined unless these specific supports are clearly outlined by an NDIS participant’s plan. This means that they will not be approved for payment. Therefore, it is crucial that Peasy Plan Management is provided with a full copy of a participant’s plan on file.

What is Not Allowed Under the New Rules:

The following items are now on the “not allowed” list:

  • Everyday household items – limited exceptions apply for replacement supports
  • Pool Maintenance
  • Massages – only permitted of provided by a remedial massage therapist, is explicitly related to a disability
  • Meals – unless clearly outlined in the plan
  • Lessons, memberships and activities – this includes gym memberships
  • Educational camps, classes and tutorials
  • Pharmacy items and medical supplies – unless directly related to the participant’s primary disability
  • Alternative therapies – this includes any therapies not delivered by a professional from an approved category
  • Subscriptions – only allowed if directly related to a disability, such as a fall monitor stated in the plan

Do I Need to Stop Using Supports That Fall Into This Category?

These changes do not require that participants stop purchasing or using supports that they have had in the past. It does however mean that these supports can no longer be paid for using a participants’ NDIS plan. Therefore, they can be funded by a participant’s personal funds if that is an option in individual circumstances.
